If you would like to find a job in Scotland, I have a good news for you: the unemployment rate is quite low. It’s pretty easy to find a job.

What you need to do to be allowed to work in Scotland

To be allowed to work in Scotland (and the rest of the UK), you’ll need to apply for your NIN: your National Insurance Number.

This number is used to identify you in the national security system and tax system in the UK.

How to apply for your NIN

You need a NIN number if you’re planning to work or get a student loan in the UK. The first thing to do is to apply on the government website.

Once you’ve applied online, your Job centre ahould give you an appointment for your NIN interview.

You will need to bring some documents to this interview to prove your identity:

  • passport or identity card
  • residence permit
  • birth or adoption certificate
  • marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • driving licence

You should receive your NIN after 10 days.
